Ian is also able to draw on a wide range of prior experience in media, publishing and information technology. He was a founder and software director of technology distribution companies Imagineering and MacDirect.

He developed the first Australian online audience tracking service, worked as a research analyst at pioneering online research company www.consult and was Principal Research Analyst for Online at AC Nielsen.consult. He continues to work on adoption and use of technology consulting projects
